Dear RCW, I don't like brake squeal. I don't like it so much that I never focus on what the pitch is. I'm too busy not liking it. Of course I can't carry a tune in a bucket, and mostly don't hear out of my left ear (need surgery but resist out of general life long cowardice and allergy to pain), so maybe I wouldn't know if my brakes were squealing high D or low E. When my brakes do squeal it is almost always caused by grime on the rims. Assuming your brakes are properly installed, I would clean the rims and pads.
Since all sound is caused by vibration I would assume that a slight variation in the hardness of the pad. smoothness of the rim, or angle of contact could produce different sounds. I teach meditation and am especially fond of the sound of silence, which the chronically inaccurate King James Bible translates rather beautifully as "the still small voice of god."
