Although I've used a fairly wide selection of metal fenders on various bikes, I prefer plastic ones because of their easier on/off quality -- on ABQ's westside we average 5-6" of rain a year in a good year, fer chrissakes. (The eastside close to the foothills averages as much as 14".) But I have to agree with Michael about plastics and the rear compartment of vehicles. I usually carry bikes laid on their sides in the back of trunks or hatchbacks, and I recall the many times I had to deal with plastic fender warpage set quasi-permanent from sitting for hours in the back of a vehicle in the hot summer sun. Or, I thought at the time that it was the sun; perhaps it was just the pressure. Metals, on the other hand, might bend slightly if you were rough when shoving the bike rearmost into a small hatchback, but it took quite a bit of trying.
