I have a Paul Taylor/Ritchey breakaway cross bike, which is very
similar to the Dahon Tournado, except my Taylor is fillet-brazed. I
traveled with it to Hawaii this past summer and like to note a few
things;
1. I packed it in the Ritchey softcase suitcase AND the cardboard box
it came in. I wrapped each tube with pipe insulation. When I opened
the case to take out the bike, it appeared OK. However, one of the
pipe insulations had a nice big dent in it. The tube under it was OK,
but the foam insulation looked bad. Nevertheless, it did the job, so I
highly recommend wrapping your tubes.
2. When I brought the box to the airport, although it weighed under
50lb (about 45lb with shoes, helmet and other accessories), it was
deemed "oversized." Further, I not only had to pay an oversized charge
($175), but also got hit with a "second baggage" charge (another
$25!). For a few $$ more, I could have bought it a seat next to me and
got it a drink!
3. When I brought it back, I decided to ship the bike back via Fedex
Ground. It *only* cost me $86 to ship back, alot cheaper. However, the
cardboard box was basically destroyed. It looked like someone really
dragged the box. Further, although I removed the skewers from the
hubs, I didn't have any sort of cover over the hub axle and it
apparently was toss hard enough so the axle put a hole through a
plastic shield and the soft case. Everything else was fine.
At this point, I'm not sure I will travel with the bike again.
