Patrick, I know you want to keep costs of tweaking this bike 
reasonable...but , I have to say, the Shimano CX70 cantilevers Riv sells 
 are superb.

 So good that I might want to have them on my all-rounder. I've used these 
on my X0-1 with  the Tiagra levers that I believe you're using and the 
braking is all I could ask for. I understand that you want to make what you 
already have work, though and these are a bit spendy.
