Thanks guys! I'm far more confident in my 2 x 9 choice, though I do love the attractiveness of a 1x. Looking back at all the backpacking (photos are the closest thing I have to "experiential memory") I see the hills I climb with a load, and that makes it clear I need the 2 x 9.
