I ride all winter in my old combat boots, Belleville 790V's<http://www.amazon.com/Belleville-Combat-Flight-Leather-BootS/dp/B003WQ0YFK/ref=pd_sim_sbs_sg_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=0TR87W1CYA8MPJC2RARN>, because they're Gore-tex. I don't like the suede leather, though. I'd wear my smooth black ones, but the soles are worn dangerously. Lotsa flight hours on those boots.
Sometimes I ride in my Red Wing 953<http://www.redwingshoes.com/red-wing-shoe/953-red-wing-shoes/953-red-wing-mens-8-inch-boot-brown>'s, because I've had them for 20 years and they are perfectly worn-in. In fact, I had worn the soles smooth. So, last year I carved a waffle pattern into the soles with a soldering gun. Now I have traction again! I just picked up a pair of Red Wing Chukka's on ebay for rather cheap, but they had some loose stitches. My local shoe repair guy charged me $7.50 to repair. Deal! They're the Handsewn 9143<http://www.redwingheritage.com/boots#&f=&m=/detail/9143-heritage-us/9143-red-wing-heritage-mens-genuine-handsewn-boot-oro-iginal>model, and they're fantastic. Rich leather, white sole. Not hikers, just country shoes. Through luck, choice, and federal service, all these boots are MUSA. And the smooth leather ones all love Newbaum's saddle goop, and the occasional silicone creme. I find I ride more casually in boots, but usually that's the goal: a mixed hike/bike activity. I also ride in sneakers, and wear SPD clip shoes when doing long road rides. I love the Riv pedal spikes I added to my Shimano campus (A530) pedals, and the spikes on your Thin Gripsters should work similarly well. My winter bike has old Deore XT bear trap pedals that are also good with boots. Tim On Wed, Mar 26, 2014 at 9:58 PM, Peter Morgano <uscpeter11...@gmail.com>wrote: > And not be in terrible pain.
