I had a great opportunity to play hookie yesterday afternoon - in the
morning I had to drive to the county seat, opposite from the office, to be
fingerprinted for my engineering license renewal. Weekday traffic is too
scary to ride close to home, so I loaded up my go-fast. I hadn't been on
that bike in a month, and hauled it to a 13-mi one-way paved creek path
that connects a series of parks. It's crazy crowded on the weekends, so
this was a rare opportunity for me. I pushed myself, and my improving
strength was noteworthy to me - but no empirical measurements for my 26
miles. While the air was delightfully cool, the sun pushed us into the 80s,
making moving more pleasant than water stops. It was exercise, but it was
all play. The only sounds, other than my Crane mini-bell to warn the
scattered pedestrians, was the whoosh of the wind and the quiet ping of my
tires on the concrete joints. My aesthetic tires made me giggle.- Evo in
front (all that fits) and Parigi in back. Chatted with some nice folks at
water stops. Recommended Brooks saddles to a couple on new upright bikes
complaining to each other about the effects of their nasty
plastic-padded-pan saddles. Tried to explain steel bikes and big tires to
a gent on an equally vintage Trek alloy road bike who seemed a bit hung up
on weight, but has recently enjoyed a lifestyle change moving from Houston
to San Antonio. And thanks for the comic - it was fun.
