hah! Don't feel bad.

I've found 'high' and 'low' to be interchanged in horrible ways
depending on if the person comes from a car-based background, despite
that they should be the same.

In general I refer to the gearing as "easier" or "harder" b/c from the
perspective of the rider that's consistent.

So a derailler which is 'reverse' is 'easier-normal' or 'untensioned
easy' in my personal vocabulary. :)

yes, I know, it's sad, but at least it is semi-consistent :)
