Hey, Mike -- I just completed a 2400 mile tour on the ACA Western Express and
Trans-Am routes using Grip Kings with Five Ten Freerider shoes.  It worked
great, and I did plenty of walking as well.  I left on the tour with a set of
Powrgrip straps bolted onto the Grip Kings, but took them off by the second
day.  I just didn't have a need to be strapped in, especially on those long
climbs across Nevada and Utah.  I recommend the combo for touring.

I also wore a pair of Swobo Baggy Short Combos (brown with green triming) and
either a Swobo button front short sleeved bamboo shirt, or one of my Ibex wool
Ts.  All very good stuff. Here's a fashion shot of me in the aforementioned
ensemble:

So I'm thinking I'll use my Grip King pedals for my upcoming tour. I'm
curious what people like for "pedaling free". I went bike camping last
night, 120 miles roundtrip so I got a good idea about if this will
work. For the most part the shoes I'm using now, old style Vans, are
fine although I did develop a bit of a hot spot. I'm thinking a new
pair of shoes will rectify the situation and I may just go with Vans
again but I'm curious what others are using.

Also, I did the ride in MUSA shorts and an REI SS button front shirt
and this also worked well. I just don't see the need or sense of
riding in bibs and clipless pedals for this tour.

Thanks,
mike
