My take on it is that she was likely a fairly novice rider herself and
didn't feel confident in her own riding, and was projecting that fear
onto you. To guess further, most people who participate in triathlon
are fairly new to the sport, and for most of them, it's their first
exposure to any sort of racing road bike. She has probably read lots
and lots of Triathlon magazine and has been brainwashed into thinking
that she's a 'serious' triathlete because she has a fancy TT bike, and
therefore looks down on those who don't.

If she were a truly serious triathlete, she would have been using her
training bike for rides, not a time trial bike, and she would have
enough experience to be comfortable riding close to others. Triathlons
are notorious (especially in the start/swim leg) for being chaotic
with lots of people uncomfortable racing in a crowd because so many of
them are just starting in any kind of sports competition. Triathlon is
great at getting people interested in fitness and competition and
cycling, but it also tends to attract some serious Type-A
personalities who get all too wrapped up in it.

In short; you didn't do anything wrong, aside from losing your temper
and poor word choice. It was her problem. The best revenge is to ride
away quickly on your "old and heavy and slow" bike.

A tidbit of Rivendell content: i raced the bike leg of two duathlons a
few years ago on my Redwood, fenders and all.
