Patrick:

Good observations. I used my Addidas Sambas, but the issue isn't shoe
discomfort, it's that I prefer to move my fee around on the pedals while
riding. For me, that relieves all sorts of crampiness and lets different
muscles work at various times.

I put MKS Sylvans with Power Grip straps back on the Rivendell. They are also
on my Rabouillet. The Saluki just got MKS Lambdas (Grip Kings) and I just love
them on that bike. My Sunday bike (Maruishi or Tsunoda for Nashbar, not sure
who made it) has V-O light weight platforms. The latter two don't have any sort
of straps.

Subject: [RBW] Re: Sylvan Lite Pedals

......

I've used most of the clipless systems on the market and a number that fell by
the wayside, but a year or two ago I switched back to clips and straps for my
road bikes (all four of them are fixed gears) because I can use both cleated
and non-cleated shoes. (I do use SPDs for my dirt bike.) I really like straps;
my own personal preference would be like the spider and the Scottish king, to
keep on trying -- especially if you have nice pedals to hand.

BTW: what sort of shoes have you used with your straps? Lugged shoes are
difficult; even the mild ridges on a pair of otherwise very nice for cycling
oxfords make it difficult to get in, tho' with practice it's only a minor
difficulty.

And, lastly, fwiw, you might try the MKS GR-9 pedals, platform: smoothish flat
surface, no ridges, and they take straps and clips. If I didn't use cleats from
time to time, these or similars would be my favorites.......
