Shimano's FD "recommended" limits are self fulfilling essentially.

Meaning, if they offer a drivetrain in say 22/32/44, they're going to
say the limit is 22.

Those that use half step gears know how these "limits" get blown off
the charts.
A 105 double 9sp FD can easily handle 24t in a 24/44/48. It's rated at
15t I believe.


The new mtb FD's are getting pretty weird, and I'm glad I don't have
to use one.
Don't let the limits fool you though, you don't know until you try it
out.
