One additional point:

A primary reason I am interested in the pedal is the relatively smooth
top surface.

I like using half clips for urban riding. However, a shoe with any
sort of tread on the bottom will sometimes get caught up on the pedal
before the toe is all the way into the half clip. Not a problem a
long rides where the foot stays on the pedal for most of the ride.
Definitely can be annoying in city riding where you may need to take
your foot off the pedal repeatedly.

Pedals such as the Grip King that are designed for using without a
clip, or the MKS-RX1 which is meant for through riding not start and
stop mean I either need to take off the half clip or wear only smooth
bottom shoes.
