Did anyone else catch the short pice on muscles, endurance and age in this weeks Roadbike rider? (It's a good, free, e-subscription weekly). I thought it was a very interesting piece, and sent them this response...
"Thanks for the explanation, hypothetical though it may be, why we loose power and speed but not endurance as we age. As a 64 year old, with 35 years of experience and a 150-200 mile a week habit; it confirms my experience. Last summer I remember doing an 80 mile ride to my sisters house in the Adirondacks, which had lots of climbing, including the 5 miles of 12+percent grade over White Face Mountain. When I arrived I felt better than when I first did that trip about 20 years ago. I too often get dropped right away on climbs, but if its long enough I often catch up and pass some much younger riders. However, I also notice another phenomenon not mentioned in your piece. As I get older my recovery time has lengthened. While my endurance for these long rides remains good, what used to take a day of recovery now routinely takes two, and I find throughout the season that I often need to take three or four days off the bike to let my body fully recover. Can you help us understand the mechanism that drives this and suggests anything, other than the obvious stuff like sleeping enough." peace, michael Westford, VT --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group.
