I know you were just nudging the "buy local" thing, but this subject comes up just often enough to spark my reply...
My entire bike was made outside the U.S. Clearly, any of us Rivendellers who decide that it's now time to promote "buy USA" need to first consider where the thousands of dollars we have already spent on our bikes and accessories went. My purchasing decisions are prioritized by Design, Quality, Origin, then Price. If the happy coincidence that something I really like is made in the U.S., then great; if not, well then the U.S. maker didn't meet my needs. The Acorn Bags products fit my purchasing priorities perfectly. I was indirectly scolded earlier this year for my choice of bottle cages because they were not made in USA, and that similar cages were made in USA and priced nearly identically. The fact was, however, that the design differences were significant to me and I preferred the non-USA design. I at least bought them from Velo Orange and not some clearance giant like Nashbar or Performance; I might have even paid a little more to buy the same product from RBW if it was something they carried. I don't think any of this makes me a traitor; it just means that I chose what I wanted and bought it from who carried it. Of course I want the small USA makers to flourish, but if what they make is not what I'm looking for, then sorry, no sale. One can always buy a cheaper (or more expensive) version of something, but it a "hobby" like ours, we tend to buy exactly what we want, even if the details are tiny. My soapbox is groaning under the pressure, so I'll step off.
