Steve, you're right about that.  Rene's directions are very good.  If I was 
continuing to have a problem, that's what I would try next.  The thing is, I am 
no longer experiencing the auto-shifting, and I now have unfettered full use of 
the full range of gearing.  I assume, then, that the derailer is aligned 
properly.

Yes, but aligning the derailleur pulley is something you should do for
good friction shifting, too.  It's not just some kind of special
indexing fiddle-faddle complication.
