The profile page’s [heatmap](https://www.openstreetmap.org/profile/heatmap)
feature is confusingly named. Yes, it’s technically a [temporal
heatmap](https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138083399), but in the context of a
geographic mapping site, a typical user will associate the term with a
[geographic heatmap](https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138082816) instead.
Renaming the feature will avoid confusion if we later introduce a geographic
heatmap to the site, like, say, a Spyglass-powered data density view.
The feature was apparently inspired by GitHub’s “[activity
overview](https://docs.github.com/en/account-and-profile/how-tos/contribution-settings/showing-an-overview-of-your-activity-on-your-profile)”,
which used to be called a “[contribution
graph](https://docs.github.com/en/account-and-profile/concepts/contributions-on-your-profile#about-your-contribution-graph)”.
Most of this site’s
[localizations](https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Special:Translations/Osm:Profiles.profile_sections.navigation.heatmap)
have chosen a literal translation of “heatmap”. The German translation meaning
“activity calendar” focuses on the visual layout, but another translator
[disagrees](https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Special:Diff/13725891) with this
approach.
