For completeness: OpenHistoricalMap’s fork of this project embeds the image
named by `image=*`, `image:2=*`, etc. My understanding is that it comes from a
time when OHM had no data consumers per se, whereas all the other historical
mapping projects out there had this and other multimedia features aplenty, so
OHM felt a need to keep up with the Joneses. I don’t think the project would
give the feature so much priority today, now that there are more immersive
OHM-based sites that cater to more specific audiences (railway fans,
genealogists, etc.) without depending on very presentational tagging.

OHM currently implements the feature as a hacky
[ohm-inspector](https://github.com/OpenHistoricalMap/ohm-inspector/) script
that gets injected into the site. (Ew.) Automatically loading images from
arbitrary URLs comes with security/privacy/reliability issues:
OpenHistoricalMap/issues#585. Some [big OSM forum
threads](https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/restrict-wikimedia-commons-urls-as-image-tag-values/2271)
 also touched on these issues.
