Yes unfortunately it's not possible to make everyone happy when their 
preferences are in conflict with each other. But we need to pick a default 
behaviour for when dark mode is active (see #5324 for more about when that 
might be). 

If we implement my Option 4b proposal, and if we implement some straightforward 
preferences (e.g. auto/light/dark prefs for UI and/or maps) then I think most 
people will be reasonably happy with the outcome. We can then revisit whether 
people want even further micro-control like choosing their own filters (to 
override the decisions of the cartographers).
