Inspired by the Global Learning XPRIZE, Black Swan Learning http://BlackSwanLearning.com is developing tablet-based software to help kids learn the Foundational Literacies: reading, writing, arithmetic, and systems thinking. In our research we have discovered learning methods we call “black swans” — they are so improbably productive that people hardly believe they exist. We have now spent a year in the classroom prototyping, debugging, and refining software that automates these methods. As the XPRIZE deadline approaches, we need some experienced Racket developers to create production-quality software.
Under Black Swan sponsorship, Jay McCarthy has completed a port of Racket to Android. Although this isn’t the full DrRacket — Android doesn’t have a full windowing system — I think it will serve our deployment purposes, with cross-development on the Mac. We now need people to develop the software abstractions that will support easy development of the learning games and the learning infrastructure we have in mind, and then of course to develop the actual learning software. We have angel funding to pay 3 or 4 people working remotely for 3 or 4 months, starting immediately, and we have promise of follow-on funding if we meet certain milestones. Let me know by email or phone if you’re interested. I can give you a peek behind the curtains of Black Swan, and we can discuss possibilities. I’ll also be at RacketCon, if you want to get together.
