Going briefly off-topic for Racket...
Definitely be encouraged to experiment in the "IoT" network-connected
device space, as hobbyists, DIYers, or researchers. But be very careful
with big IoT investments. Also be skeptical of current off-the-shelf
IoT products and specs, for security- or safety-sensitive purposes.
I've looked a bit at ZigBee (including HA), Z-Wave, and proprietary
WiFi-based approaches in practice recently (that was why I packaged
Racket for OpenWRT). I haven't looked at MQTT, nor the Google
yet-another-protocol.
Besides functional and security issues (which I won't get into here),
there are two huge political problems affecting most IoT efforts:
* Many/most companies are focused on land-grabbing the potentially
massive new commercial space, with a foothold/stranglehold trumping all
other considerations.
* There is a general industry desire to extend the pervasive industry
snooping that now happens on the Web and on smartphones/tablets, to
include traditionally non-networked things in the home, in the car, and
in public spaces.
Again, hobby/DIY and research activities are good. But don't be misled
by MBAs who look at the term "Internet of Things" and see only the
market capitalization of Apple, Google, and Facebook. If you're going
to do serious work in this space, even non-commercially, I suspect
you'll probably soon find it helpful to understand something of the
commercial maneuvers, more than in many other technical spaces.
