Note that some of that code is ancient, and could probably be organized much better these days. (For example, using something like promises instead of the hand-rolled quasi-cps thing for the search.) Worse, the complication of the search is not really needed now: originally, the search was lond enough to benefit from being interrupted by a new character, but now it's fast enough to not even be noticed. Another questionable feature is the loading of the whole index into memory and searching through it (unless someone cleaned that out since then...).
