Thanks all, it's effectively a problem with stabular. (TexLive 2013)
For now a fix "good enough" was to change \begin{stabular} with
\begin{tabular}.
Since it's not critical at this point, I'll wait until the workaround Robby
mentions ships into the main distrib.
