I have also wanted this, for measuring approx. GC cost when micro-optimizing.
I wonder how difficult it would be to have randomly interruptible GC. It seems impossible, but I would use it. The Impossible is often desirable.
For a hard real-time system? I recall that there's been research on that, but I don't know the current state of the art.
