while it was entirely a path problem, the latest (2010) MacTex does *not* contain texi2dvi: which texi2dvi /usr/bin/texi2dvi and $:/usr/local/texlive/2010/bin/x86_64-darwin$ ls texi* texindy but no texi2dvi.
