The workaround works well, but I think I agree that \item{fooval.<m>}{}
is the the better option here. (I'm tempted, but I shouldn't use
\item{\code{fooval.\var{<m>}}}, because \code{} arguments should be
syntactically valid R.)

I will also use \var{<m>} outside the \item headers, at least for now.
