Pandoc is indeed not easy to build. Luckily, we don't have to build it
ourselves. R-hub has fully static self-contained binaries for 1.x:

and there are official static binaries and installers for 2.x:
https://github.com/jgm/pandoc/releases
I don't see Solaris builds there -- as far as I know that's the flavour
of CRAN machine that's missing it. rgl gets a warning about CRAN being
unable to build the vignettes because of that.
