I added Matrix in Suggests (I am not sure that is the way to go), but the same 
error occurred with --as-cran: there is no package called 'Matrix.' Again, 
there is no problem without --as-cran.

Doesn't this mean that you may to ensure Matrix is present when survival
might be used -- so if your package suggests survival it should also suggest
Matrix?
