Actually, it's a bit worse, because many CRAN sites are aliased to wu-wien, which does the redirection (I suppose the reason is that the mirror sites don't do virtual hosts). E.g., for cran.dk.r-project.org, you currently need to know that the server is actually http://mirrors.dotsrc.org/cran/ or get stuck waiting for a response from Vienna.
