Thank you for your reply Matthew, There are many things I could say about the myriad difficulties I have had in progressing with R, none worth stating here. For the record I have read the posting guidelines, at least to the extent possible in the time available.
For what its worth, I think I have found a way around this little problem by limiting parameters outside the function using an if(any()) statement. I'll have a look at R-forge.
