Thanks Martin, your reply was extremely helpful. It took me a bit of time to figure out what TEXINPUTS are and where they should be specify, but it is working now. Just for reference, I had to include an "export TEXINPUTS" statement in my .bashrc for pdflatex to work in a command line, and add a path in the TEXINPUTS environment variable in Kile Tools > Configure Kile > Latex > General.
