It works for the rest of us who suggested this.

plot(1:10, ylab = expression(delta*t))

gives me a plot with the require glyph in the y-axis label.

Can you show your code or, better still, some example data that shows
the problem for you so we can test this? See the posting guide for what
is required etc.

Off the top of the head, you did use it *within* the call to plot, yes?
If you just type that at the prompt you'd get what you claim to see:

> ylab = expression(delta*t)
> ylab
expression(delta * t)

Of course, I wouldn't have to guess of the top of my head if you'd shown
exactly what you *did* do ;-)
