That isn't completely accurate. To ensure that the plot doesn't start
a new page, you need something like
pdf()
plot.new()
levelplot(volcano, panel = panel.filledcontour,
col.regions = terrain.colors,
cuts = 25,
plot.args = list(newpage = FALSE))
dev.off()
