I think a bit of standardization and commercial exposure would help R, given the fact it is much much better than any other expensive stats package yet has no gotten the market share it deserves because everyone is either building it or using it, hence no one has actually taken the effort to promote it.
Also R package developers are overwhelmingly for open source so they would be able to resist any "devious" commercial angle.
