Stephen, I see lots of answers with packages and resources, but not book recommendations. I have used Introduction to Data Technologies by Paul Murrell (https://www.stat.auckland.ac.nz/~paul/ItDT/) to teach SQL and database design and would recommend looking at it as a possibility.
