Hello Yannick, That behavior is documented in the help for subsetting ( ?'$' ):
Both ‘[[’ and ‘$’ select a single element of the list. The main difference is that ‘$’ does not allow computed indices, whereas ‘[[’ does. ‘x$name’ is equivalent to ‘x[["name", exact = FALSE]]’. Also, the partial matching behavior of ‘[[’ can be controlled using the ‘exact’ argument. You can avoid it by using [[]] instead: > swiss[['Ex']] NULL > head(swiss[['Examination']]) [1] 15 6 5 12 17 9 That's one of the major reasons using $ is sometimes discouraged.
