The problem is in your function, not in by.
> dstats(mtcars[,c('mpg', 'hp')])
Error in is.data.frame(x) :
(list) object cannot be coerced to type 'double'
In addition: Warning message:
In mean.default(x) : argument is not numeric or logical: returning NA

Your function expects vector but you give it data frame and it cannot handle
data frames.
