A wild guess is that you have not converted your newdate column into a time 
metric such as Date or POSIXt. Our responses can be ever so much more helpful 
if you follow the Posting Guide (mentioned in the footer), e.g. posting using 
plain text so the code gets through the mailing list successfully, and if you 
make your example reproducible [1].
