Not as a simple color, but you can use the rasterImage function to add a rectangle with a checkerboard pattern to a an existing plot, the examples for the function use a simple checkerboard pattern.
Be careful of overusing something like this, too many patterned areas in a plot can be more distracting and distorting than useful.
