Zoe, If you use a Wind Rose diagram (e.g., http://rgm2.lab.nig.ac.jp/RGM2/func.php?rd_id=circular:wind rose), which are available in several packages, you could plot tidal speed and direction Wind Rose diagrams in a x-y plot to plot location. If you used the lattice package, this could give you the 5-dimension (time) in each panel. What I think you will need to pull this off is the R package grImport Google for examples of this, for instance, the paper by Paul Murrell: http://www.stat.auckland.ac.nz/~paul/R/grImport/import.pdf which is very cool.
