Dear Brian, I found this in the archives and was going to follow your advice, but can't get the source code of the function extractAIC you suggest modifying. Getting the full source code of stepAIC straight from the R session (by typing the function name) was immediate. Do I need to go down another route to get to the source of extractAIC?
