I have had issues with some parallel backends not finding functions within a namespace for packages listed in the ".packages" argument or explicitly loaded in the body of the foreach loop. This has occurred with MPI but not with multicore. I can get around this to some extent by calling the functions using the namespace (eg foo:::bar) but this is pretty kludgy.
