Ben, thanks very much for the pointer but the bug must not really be fixed. I encounter the problem when using version 2140.79, which is the version at http://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/fOptions/ and which has a date of 2011-06-08. Oddly I have a machine with (what I thought was) an up-to-date version of 13.2 which includes fOptions version 2110.78, dated 2010-04-27. This is the one install on which I have *not* encountered the problem. Very strange!
