actually, the big difference between the two computers is in the library path. On the computer where package installation works, .libPaths() returns: > .libPaths() [1] "/usr/local/lib/R/site-library" "/usr/lib/R/site-library" [3] "/usr/lib/R/library" With no path being part of my local home directory... and the install puts the installed packages into the first one (/usr/local/lib/R/site-library/) as expected. I will try to change the destination directory for the install on the other computer.
