Currently we test R on a Windows 7 64 bit machine, but I don't know of anyone else who is testing it on an XP 64 bit machine. Can you try doing the build on a 32 bit OS, or on Windows 7? One other thing to try is to update your installation to 2.12.2-patched. I'm not aware of any bug fixes that would fix the problem you are seeing, but there might be something there.
