Also, things like this come in handy at times:

## From dept. of slightly dirty trix:
txt <- "fmffmfmfmfmfmmmmfmmmffmff"
lizards$sex <- factor(unlist(strsplit(txt,"")),levels=c("m","f"))

It is easily generalized to include a delimiter.
