the current code is like this
vidx<-grep(paste('^',vars[vi],'$',sep=''),gsub("[[:punct:]]","",strrl1[[datbeg-1]]),ignore.case=T)
where as the old one was
vidx<-grep(vars[vi],gsub("[[:punct:]]","",strrl1[[datbeg-1]]),ignore.case=T)
