Sebastian -
panel.loess will be more suitable for use with
xyplot. To get both points and the smoothed line,
you can use
xyplot(incidence~year,melanoma,panel=function(x,y,...){
panel.xyplot(x,y,...)
panel.loess(x,y,...)})
