I've heard no other comments, tried a version of your patch and checked that it does *not* break either 32-bit or 64-bit Linux. At the same time, that (very old) patch looks sensible and solves your problem and you are one of very few who actively work on building R on AIX ==> I have committed a corresponding change to src/extra/tre/tre-internal.h now.
