I am trying to use install.packages obtained from here
http://stat.ethz.ch/R-manual/R-devel/library/utils/html/install.packages.html
My computer has these
OS: 64-bit blfs linux R2.15.1

A) I did the following:-
export DIR=/home/stats/R-2.15.0_runTEST190712A
export DEST=/home/stats/Rtester
cd $DEST
${DIR}/bin/R install.packages(MASS_7.3-17.tar.gz, ${DEST}, repos =
getOption("NULL"),
contriburl = contrib.url(NULL, type),
internal, available = NULL, destdir = ${DEST},
dependencies = NA, type = getOption("pkgType"),
configure.args = getOption("configure.args"),
configure.vars = getOption("configure.vars"),
clean = FALSE, Ncpus = getOption("2", 1L),
libs_only = FALSE, INSTALL_opts,--verbose)
and this is the result
